Dive into the mesmerizing beauty of the Great Barrier Reef at ‘Immerse’ reef inspired art installation, scattered across the Airlie Beach foreshore, centred beneath the iconic fig tree.
Immerse yourself in the wonder of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven Wonders of the World. From shallow estuarine areas to deep oceanic waters there is a vast array of creatures, corals and habitats to be found. Follow the trail of works created by the Immerse artist group and the Whitsunday community, made from marine debris and recycled or repurposed materials.
Discover the Great 8 – A selection of some of the Reef’s most iconic and favourite inhabitants, which feature at the top of visitors lists of wildlife to encounter. The Great 8 reflect the diversity and beauty of the World Heritage Listed Marine Park. From reptiles to mammals, small to large, these key species of the Reef can be found in various locations throughout the Marine Park.

The great 8 are;
Clownfish, Giant Clams, Manta Rays, Maori Wrasse, Potato Cod, Sharks, Turtles, Whales
We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land and sea country – the Ngaro People of the Whitsunday Islands including Airlie Beach and the Giya People of the Proserpine area, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community.

The Immerse art installation is created by a dedicated team of local and regional artists including Margaret Burgess, Anita Pender, Brigitte Peel, Liz Knight and Noemi Martinez led by Art Director and Festival Chairperson Margie Murphy.
The installation also includes animated projections by Donna Marie Robinson and lanterns created by the arts team and the community led by Lalune Croker.
